Revolutionary ideas should speak to an entire community–not merely academics, politicos, or radicals–and communicate in an accessible, appealing form. The gay community needs revolutionary voices that confront deep-seated issues surrounding our sexuality; voices that make us rethink what it means to be gay. Can we interrogate gay identity and also do something, make something, or otherwise shake up our community with the truth? And can we do it in a way, and in a format, that all gay people can access?
Yes, and you need look no further than renowned pornographer Paul Morris to find an example of gay critique that walks the walk, talks the talk, and packages it in a way the mainstream gay can access. Morris says he wants his videos to capture the full extent of gay male sexuality, in all of its rawness. "I believe that it’s through sex that men create the very language that expresses who and what they are," says Morris. "When men fuck, they do so with everything they’ve got: their fears, their anger, their passion and pure desire." He’s got big ideas, but the way he portrays them is more powerful than any cloistered critic ever could be. This man’s films capture the deepest, darkest corners of the gay male psyche on film; his work goes beyond pornography. It is art.
In the 2014 film Viral Loads, Morris says "Mansex is a virus, one that uses men as its host. Some try to resist it. Others embrace it as the source of life and meaning." The crescendo of this film occurs when a jar labeled "HIV+ CUM" is funneled directly into a willing bottom’s ass. Morris truly transforms the scourge of HIV into something else–the Mansex virus–and shows how we can embrace it as a truth of our community. He erases fear of the virus. Morris shows the oneness gay men experience when they swap cum.
In the film Breeding Season 3, Paul Morris presents the starkest truths possible about fear, anger, passion, and desire. Morris offered up a willing sex slave (Miles) for his favorite star, the nubile Dayton O’Connor, to torture. In the scene, O’Connor, who is an otherwise vanilla pornstar, carves "Paul Morris" into Miles’s chest with a knife. O’Connor then rapes Miles without a condom, using his victim’s blood as lube. Paul Morris’s extreme theory about gay male identity is sealed with the blood of the willing. This could be us in our deepest desires, and it’s only $8 to download online.
The truth should do more than talk, it should move us and shake us up. Theory should act and not be consigned to dusty library bookshelves. If we are to be revolutionary with our ideas, we need to speak to a wide audience in a way they can easily access. Paul Morris does all of this with his work. It may look ugly, shocking, and downright criminal, yet he presents truths about gayness in a Cinéma Vérité that any one of us can enjoy right now.
