Kim Davis: I ‘Failed So Miserably At Marriage’

Kentucky clerk and same-sex marriage opponent Kim Davis has at least one thing in common with her biggest detractors: they both think she’s lousy at marriage.

Davis, who famously refused to sign gay couples’ marriage license because she said it went against "God’s definition of marriage," has been divorced three times.

"How ironic that God would use a person like me, who failed so miserably at marriage in the world, to defend it now," she told the Associated Press on Tuesday. "The Lord picks the unlikely source to convey the message."

According to public records, she has been married four times, twice to her current husband. Critics of Davis, like columnist and LGBT rights advocate Dan Savage, say that her behavior makes her anti-gay actions that much harder to swallow.

“She is a hypocrite,” Savage said. "Jesus Christ himself in Scripture condemns divorce, calls it adultery and forbids it. Jesus Christ in Scripture says not one word about same-sex marriage,"

Davis, who belongs to the Apostolic Christian Church, claims that because she only became religious after her marital misdoings, it’s totally fine and not at all hypocritical.

"I am not perfect. No one is," she said. "But I am forgiven and I love my Lord and must be obedient to Him and to the Word of God."

The Rowan County Clerk returned to the news cycle this week after Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin (R) announced that he would remove clerks’ names from state marriage licenses. The move is meant to protect officials who oppose same-sex marriage but are legally obligated to okay them.

Davis spent five days in jail in September for refusing to put her name on same-sex marriage licenses. Since then, one of her deputies has been signing them instead. The American Civil Liberties Union is suing her.
