Drag Icon Divine May Get The Baltimore Monument She Deserves

i_am_divine_2

She never got those cha-cha heels, but Divine could be in for something even better in Baltimore — her own monument!

If you’re not aware of Divine (and seriously, you need to be), he was a hairdresser turned drag queen who starred in many films by trash titan John Waters, including Hairspray, Female Trouble and Pink Flamingos, where he…did this.

There’s a push to get the drag superstar an eight-foot monument in the city that birthed his career (yes, Divine was also referred to as “him”) by local storeowner Michal Makarovich, who hopes the city’s Public Art Commission will fund the piece.

Makarovich thinks the monument would boost tourism from the drag icon’s fans:

“There will be pilgrimages to see this, I think. We think there will be an international fan base.”

The proposal calls for the monument to be made from concrete and marble and stand eight feet tall, and also includes a small bronzed version of dog poop, because…well you watched the video above.

The monument would cost anywhere from $50-$100k, and it seems to have a pretty powerful fan. As a spokesperson for Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake told the Baltimore Sun:

“The mayor thinks that the idea sounds divine, and looks forward to seeing more details on the proposal.”

If you need a Divine education, the documentary I Am Divine is a great place to start. If you didn’t get that cha-cha heels reference, watch below and get your life.
